今日美术馆举办《二手现实》大型当代艺术展

　　这件作品起源于2002年一次重要的艺术事件——长征。众多中国当代艺术家都根据自己的兴趣，以自己的作品参与到其中。
　　我对长征的最后一站——延安感兴趣。因为那里的延安纪念馆中有一位人称“泥塑王”的民间雕塑家——王文海。他几十年来用泥巴塑了大大小小百尊毛主席像。因为他的民间泥塑家身份，而我是正统学院里的教授，所以我想找个机会与他合作一次。就问他愿不愿塑一个睡觉的毛主席。毛主席也是人，在日常生活中也要吃喝睡觉，也会犯错误，而不是已有的艺术品里面表现那样，永远崇高、雄伟、高瞻远瞩地站在那里。王文海同意，我们就一起合作做了这个《睡觉的毛主席》。按道理说，展示这个作品最好的环境是延安的窑洞里的土炕上。
　　我是读毛主席的书长大的，毛主席对我来说，是难以超越的。现在中国已经跨入世界经济一体化WTO的时代。毛泽东的时代虽然过去，但我觉得我的根实际上还是扎在毛泽东时代。我总不免要用他的方法去想问题，甚至当我想破除他的想法时，也还是使用他教会我的方法。

　　The origin of this piece dates back to 2002, the date of an important art event: the Long March. Throngs of contemporary Chinese artists were attracted by their own interests in the project and submitted their pieces to participate.
　　I was interested in the Long March’s last stop: Yan’an. My interest was in one man who works at the Yan’an Memorial Museum dubbed “The King of Clay Sculpture.” His real name is Wang Wenhai. For several decades he has used clay to mold large and small images of Chairman Mao. Because of his identity as an unprofessional artist and mine as a legitimate Art Academy professor, I thought it would be a great idea to collaborate with him. I asked him if he was willing to make a sculpture of Mao while asleep. Chairman Mao was a person just like the rest of us, and in every day life ate, drank, sleep, and made mistakes. Artists had not yet captured such a pose. Mao has always looked sublime and magnificent, standing high above the rest of the world. Wang Wenhai agreed and so we began on a sculpture called “Sleeping Chairman Mao.” The logical place to exhibit this sculpture would be on one of the earthen kangs (a bed with a stove underneath) inside one of Yan’an’s many cave-dwellings.
　　I read Mao’s books growing up. In my eyes, Mao is hard to transcend. Now, China has already stepped into the world’s economy and merged with the WTO. Although Mao’s time is past, I must admit that I feel still tied up in Mao’s time. I always use his methods of thinking to solve problems, to the point that I discover that I am using his methods he taught me even when I am trying to deconstruct his way of thinking.
